The obverse of the coin has a bust of George Washington in profile, facing left. It was designed by John Flanagan and derives from a 1786 bust sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The reverse of the Washington Quarter was in circulation from 1932-1974 and 1977-1998. It features a bald eagle, a design by John Flanagan. Washington Quarters that were minted from 1965-1998 is made up of the same metals as today's current Quarter. It also has the same size and weight. It is made of cupronickel (8.33% Ni and the balance Cu). Before 1965, quarters contained 90% silver, 10% copper.
